Female Chelsea Doctor, Eva Carneiro leaves after Jose Mourinho critics

Female Chelsea Doctor, Eva Carneiro leaves after Jose Mourinho critics
Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro has decided to leave the club – six weeks after criticism from manager Jose Mourinho

Carneiro had her role downgraded after Mourinho said his medical staff were “naive” for treating Eden Hazard during the 2-2 draw with Swansea on 8 August.

Chelsea asked Carneiro, 42, to return to work, but she has decided not to and is now considering her legal position.

The Football Association is looking into a complaint that Mourinho used abusive or sexist language towards her.

Chelsea say they do not comment on internal staffing matters.

Heather Rabbatts, chair of the FA’s Inclusion Advisory Board, expressed her “sadness and anger” at the news of Carneiro’s departure

What happened?

Carneiro and head physio Jon Fearn went onto the pitch to treat midfielder Hazard in the closing stages of the draw with Swansea.

It meant the Blues were temporarily reduced to nine men, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois having been sent off, and Mourinho said the duo had been “impulsive and naive”.
Carneiro lost her place on the bench and was no longer allowed to attend matches or training sessions.

Two days after the incident, she posted a message on Facebook thanking the public for their “overwhelming support”.

Mourinho stood by his decision to remove her from her role, adding he had a “good relationship” with his medical staff.

‘Her departure raises a serious question’

Rabbatts, the FA’s only female board member, has been vocal in her support of Carneiro, whom she said acted “properly”.

“Her departure raises a serious question on how players are safeguarded if their medical support is compromised,” said Rabbatts.

“The footage of the abuse she has endured in silence from the stands during her career is something we should all be ashamed of.

“I hope that Eva’s own situation can be resolved quickly and positively and that she will be able to continue to work in a senior position within the game.”

The Women in Football group said Carneiro was highly respected and it was “bitterly disappointed” about her departure.

“We believe it is appalling that her professionalism and understanding of football were subsequently called into question by manager Jose Mourinho and it threatened to undermine her professional reputation,” said a spokesperson.

“We also believe that Dr Carneiro’s treatment and ultimate departure from Chelsea FC sends out a worrying and alienating message to the already small numbers of female medical staff working in the national game.”

Who is Eva Carneiro?

Carneiro is a 42-year-old sports medicine specialist who was born in Gibraltar

She studied medicine at Nottingham University and completed her MSc in Sport and Exercise at Queen Mary University of London

Carniero previously worked at the British Olympic Medical Institute, with England Women’s Football and UK Athletics, before joining Chelsea in 2009

Road projects: NEC okays N535.5bn refund to states

Road projects: NEC okays N535.5bn refund to states todaystalk.com.ng
President Muhammadu Buhari
The National Economic Council at its meeting on Thursday approved the reimbursement of N535.5bn to states for the funds they spent on federal roads.

The Oyo State Governor, Chief Abiola Ajimobi, stated this while briefing state House correspondents after the meeting in Abuja.

He said that 13 states had met the requirements for the reimbursement of the money.

Also at the meeting were his counterparts from Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje; Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.

Ajimobi said, “Another issue discussed is the refund of expenses incurred on repair of federal roads by states. As listed here, we have 13 states that have fully complied with the re-imbursement requirements. We have eight states that have partially complied; 21 states without compliance and the total sum of claims to be re-imbursed is exactly N535, 596, 386, in other words, N535.5bn.”

The governor said that N13bn had been disbursed to states as of 2013, adding that government was facing the challenge of inadequate funding.

He also said that 26 state governments had applied for restructuring of their bank loans of about N500bn.

Ajimobi said that 11 of the states had concluded and submitted all relevant documents.

He added that 13 states were involved in the second phase of the loan restructuring.

He said, “The other major item that was discussed had to do with the restructuring of bank loans to state governments, and the restructuring was done into the Federal Government bonds and the Director-General of Debt Management Office reported as follows; ‘that 26 states applied for the loans, that 11 states have concluded and submitted all relevant documents; that 13 states are involved in the second phase to commence immediately. And the total money involved in the restructuring stood at over N500bn.”

According to him, the Accountant General of the Federation told the Council that the Excess Crude proceeds balance was over $2.257bn as of September 15, 2015.

Ajimobi said that the council discussed the NEC Ad-hoc committee on the management of the ECA and the Federation Account.

The governor stated that the committee told the council that it interacted with many revenue generating agencies.

According to him, the committee disclosed that there was lack of transparency and accountability as well as lack of check and balances in the operation of the Federation Account.

The governor stated, “Secondly, they also told the council that the work of the committee is ongoing, so we still have more reports to receive from them; that is in its interaction with the revenue generating agencies.”

He also said that the council was told that fertilizer used by farmers increased by over 271 per cent.

He stated, “Lastly, we discussed the issues of the current and future agricultural policy direction. The Permanent Secretary made a very lucid presentation and it was extensively discussed and he gave us information on database of farmers in proceeds production capacity of food storage and grains increased fertilizer.

“And he told us specifically that fertilizer used by farmers increased by over 271 per cent which was commendable, but the conclusion was that there was the need for more interaction with the states and local governments and their approach in agriculture should be bottom-top approach,” he stated
The governor said that the NEC was also briefed about the planned agricultural training programme of the ministry of agriculture.

According to him, 12 states and the Federal Capital Territory have been selected for the first phase.
He said the second phase would include non -educated youths to be spread across states by geopolitical zones.

Workers Protests, as Lacasera sacks 700 workers over unionism

Workers Protests, as Lacasera sacks 700 workers over unionism todaystalk.com.ng
Workers Protests, as Lacasera sacks 700 workers over unionism

Scores of angry workers of La Casera Company Plc staged a protest, on Monday, in Lagos after about 700 workers received their sack letters, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported.

The workers said they are protesting because the company’s management responded to their efforts at unionism by firing all of them.

The company, however, described the protest as an invasion of its premises by ‘hoodlums.’

NAN reported that the crisis began after the workers arrived at the company premises in Amuwo Odofin Industrial Estate, Mile 2, Lagos, and found the gate locked against them and a notice of disengagement pasted at the entrance.

The notice, dated September 14 and addressed to all members of staff, stated that “as a result of the unwarranted breaking-in and invasion of our business premises on September 11, we cannot guarantee the well-being of our employees from hired hoodlums and their collaborators.

“As a result of this unprovoked act of vandalism, we are unable to continue operations under this circumstance. Unfortunately, we regret to inform all our staff of their immediate disengagement.”

The workers, under the aegis of the National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE), condemned the act, noting that some of them had worked for between five and 15 years.

Mr Mike Olarenwaju, Head of Education Department in NUFBTE, who spoke for the workers, said that for 12 years, the company denied workers the right to be unionised.

Olarenwaju said that when an in-house union was about to be inaugurated, the management of the company sacked the chairman, which made the NUFBTE officials to visit the company on Friday, September 11 to address the workers.

“We were surprised today that the company locked the gate and sacked the workers. Meanwhile, the case between the workers and the company over unionisation is currently at the National Industrial Court,” he said.

Olanrewaju urged the government to intervene in issues of unfair labour practices being perpetrated by foreign companies.

He said that until the workers were re-absorbed, the union would continue to picket the company.

Mr Idowu Adelakun, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), told NAN that the act of calling labour officials hoodlums was wrong and vowed that labour would not allow the company to function until the matter was resolved.

Lacasera is a beverage company owned by Indians which started operations in Nigeria in 2000.

When contacted, the Human Resources Manager of the company, identified as Chief Otemewo, told NAN on phone that he was not aware of the crisis and promised to call back when he obtained details of the sack. (NAN)
