Floyd Mayweather's clan jousts with Rocky Marciano's as record-tying fight approaches

Floyd Mayweather's clan jousts with Rocky Marciano's as record-tying fight approaches.... http://todaystalk.com.ng

The youngest brother of boxer Rocky Marciano wants to make something clear.
In 49 professional fights, Marciano knocked out 43 of his opponents and beat some in brutal fashion. But outside the ring, he was known as a gentleman. And if he were alive today, Marciano would be ready to congratulate Floyd Mayweather Jr., if, as expected, Mayweather Jr. beats Andre Berto Sept. 12 and ties Marciano’s career record of 49-0, said Peter Marciano, youngest brother of the legendary boxer.

“I guess I’m maybe just not as charitable as that,” Peter Marciano said. “I absolutely, unequivocally will tell you that I would like to see (Mayweather) get beat.”

MAYWEATHER: ‘No second thoughts’ about retirement

With one of boxing’s most noted records at stake — Marciano has had sole possession of it since knocking out Archie Moore 60 years ago — members of the Mayweather and Marciano clans have traded verbal shots.

Earlier this month, while declaring his son will tie Marciano’s record with a victory in the upcoming fight against Berto, Floyd Mayweather Sr. said Marciano fought “bums.”

“You look at Rocky Marciano’s record,” he said. “You will not find no name that ever stood out in boxing. Nobody but Joe Louis, and he was the old man.”

During recent interviews with USA TODAY Sports, Peter Marciano and Rocky Marciano Jr., son of the legendary fighter, responded with jabs.

“He’s not an exciting fighter,” Peter Marciano said of Mayweather Jr., adding that he once heard Mayweather Jr. express disrespect during an interview for Marciano’s 49-0 record. “He’s just a great defensive fighter, a master. And that equates to very uninteresting boxing matches.”

Although he did not use the word bums, Marciano Jr. questioned Mayweather’s decision to fight Berto — who has lost three of his last six fights — for what Mayweather has said will be his last fight.

“I feel disappointed,” Marciano Jr. said of the matchup. “When he’s had control of his career, he’s been able to pick and choose the fighters just like he picked Berto. There’s probably some other fighters that would maybe give him more of a challenge.

“If my father’s guilty of anything, he’s guilty of fighting whoever they put in front of him. He wanted a shot at the championship, and whatever roadblock they put in front of him, he confronted and overcame.”

MAYWEATHER-ROUSEY: The other war of words continues

More than engaging in a war of words, the Marcianos said, they want to set the record straight about the 49-0 mark and the man who set it.

The oldest child of Italian immigrants, Rocky Marciano initially thought professional baseball was his path to a more prosperous life than his father could afford as a shoe factory worker. Marciano, a catcher, got a a tryout with the Chicago Cubs after serving in the army between 1943 and 1946.

The Cubs passed.

So at the suggestion of a friend, Marciano decided to give boxing a try. Never mind that at the age of 24 Rocky Marciano’s skills were unrefined and at 5-11, 190 he looked undersized for the heavyweight division.

What he lacked in precision and stature, he made up for in power.

Between his professional debut in 1947 and his knockout of Moore in 1953, fewer than half Marciano’s opponents lasted three rounds with him.

“My father bascially stalked you the whole fight,” Rocky Marciano Jr. said. “If you watch (tapes of) my father, he very rarely took a step backward. He was always moving forward, following a fighter, chasing him around.”

His most notable victories came against Jersey Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles and an aging Joe Louis.

Peter Marciano said his brother retired in part because there were no opponents left challenging enough to inspire Rocky Marciano to train — although did get back in the gym in 1969 to prepare for a fight against Muhammad Ali.

It was billed as The Super Fight, and the outcome was determined by computer. The two fighters sparred and filmed sequences that were patched together for the fight, broadcast in theaters around the country.

Rocky Marciano won in the 13th round, and Peter Marciano said he will never forget the last sparring session between the two boxers.

“Muhammad had this old brown paper bag,” Peter Marciano said. “And inside the brown paper bag he had three or four grapefruits. He said, ‘Rocky, would you care for some?’ And Rocky said, ‘Oh, I love grapefruits.’

“Muhammad Ali was actually peeling the grapefruit and ripping the wedges apart and he offered me some and I ate a couple of them. They were talking and at the time the country had had a bad situation, things were not good.”

MONEY: Mayweather trains while holding wad of cash

Racial tension simmered across the country, recalled Peter Marciano, and he said his brother and Ali hatched the idea of barnstorming across the country and using their own friendship — the retired white champion and the black superstar — to address the problem.

But not long after that discussion, on the eve of Marciano’s 46th birthday, Marciano died. He was one of three passengers in a small private plane that crashed in Iowa.

Ali was among the boxers who attended the wake, Peter Marciano said.

“The respect they had for each other was something to behold,” he said. “This was genuine respect.”
The same clearly is not true of the Mayweather and Marciano clans, and Peter Marciano wants to make one other thing clear before Mayweather Jr. steps into the ring.

Rocky Marciano fought against heavyweights, while Mayweather Jr. has fought welterweights, men some 50 pounds lighter than the boxers Marciano beat.

“I’m hoping he can see the difference,” Peter Marciano said of Mayweather Jr.

Actress Megan Fox files for divorce

Actress Megan Fox files for divorce

After 11 years together and two children, Megan Fox has filed papers to divorce her husband, actor Brain Austin Green. TMZ reports below..
Megan Fox has filed for divorce, just days after announcing her separation from husband Brian Austin Green. Fox, who's repped by disso-queen Laura Wasser, cites the standard "irreconcilable differences." She's asking for joint physical and legal custody of the couple's 2 sons.
Sources close to the couple tell TMZ, there is no prenup, so earnings during their 5-year marriage are community property and divided 50/50. They've been together for 11 years and we're told the probability is their assets are so co-mingled, they will be divided in half.

Our sources say the likelihood is Megan will end up paying Brian spousal support, partly because of the disparity in income and partly because he's had medical problems.

We're also told the divorce is "very amicable," to the point they continue to live in the same house.
The date of separation is listed as June 15th.

NBC Grants Nigeria's First Women Radio Station Licence

Following months of speculation, it is official that Nigeria’s first radio station for women and the family will be going live on the airwaves soon.

todaystalk.com.ng
Dr. Toun Okewale Sonaiya, Director St. Ives Communications

Sources say the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) recently issued a broadcasting licence to St. Ives Communications as operator of a specialised radio station for women.

And as the people gear up for its launch, it’s been noted that the station will be the first of its kind in Nigeria.

Findings have also revealed that the initiatives of the project are Dr. Tunde Okewale, Chief Medical Director at St. Ives Specialist Hospital, Lagos; as well as veteran broadcast journalist, Toun Okewale Sonaiya, Director St. Ives Communications.

Dr. Wale, as he is fondly called, is said to have been inspired to conceive the idea of a radio station for women having worked and related closely with female clients in his career. This experience led to his understanding of the plight of Nigerian women, and their struggle to be heard.

“He felt a need to fill an obvious gap in the Nigerian broadcast industry,” our source says.
Okewale added that the brains behind the ‘gender-sensitive’ radio station believe the initiative will improve the lot of the Nigerian woman by the time the station goes live.

As the radio station prepares to commence operations, it promises to provide a platform to engage on key issues revolving around local, national and international relevance for Nigerian women.
Its programming will be targeted towards the advancement and social wealth of Nigerian women and their families.

The radio station will reportedly provide the womenfolk access to truly quality, informative and entertaining programming cutting across business, politics, sports, news and entertainment from the women perspective.

Also, we were told that the radio station will not only focus on women, but also cater to the interests of the male gender and the entire family, but especially highlighting issues important to women.

Further developments on this will be made available soon.

Given this move though, it is clear that the women folks are steadily getting higher in their quests to be heard. A similar station, however, already exists (Inspiration FM, Lagos) and it caters to family and lifestyle.

Albino Foundation demands investigation into member’s death in Lagos

It was reported on this blog that 23-year-old albino, Ugochukwu Ugogbua, committed suicide on Sunday Aug 16th. Well yesterday his house was besieged by members of the Albino Foundation, who demanded to know what made him kill himself. There were rumours that Ugo had killed himself because his parents wanted him to join Jehovah's Witnesses, a claim his family has since denied.
The members of the Albino Foundation commiserated with the bereaved family then proceeded to the police station to enquire about the outcome of their investigation on the incident.

At Festac Police Division, Lagos State Coordinator of Albino Foundation, Mrs. Omolala Joseph, said:
“We are here on behalf of the national headquarters of Albino Foundation in Abuja to find out what exactly led to the death of our colleague. “Though he was not a registered member of the Foundation, he was an albino like us, therefore, we have a duty to pay a condolence visit to the family, counsel them and orientate them. “Things like this cannot just happen. We need to know the exact cause so as to help re-orientate others.”
A member of the family, who simply gave her name as Oluchi, said:
“We have read a lot of reports on my brother’s death. I want to categorically state that he did not kill himself because he was forced to become a Jehovah’s Witnesses member. “It was not also because he was stigmatised as an albino. The truth is that what led him into the act were powers beyond him and he never left any note for us concerning his death.”
It was gathered that late Ugochukwu started behaving strangely a few months before he took his life. Corroborating the claim, Oluchi said:
“We discovered a month before his death that he started moving with some boys in the area. Later, he became reserved and then resigned from his job as a dry cleaning attendant. “We started counselling him, unknown to us that he was planning to take his life. We prevented his first attempt when he mixed cement and water and was on the verge of drinking it when he was stopped.”

It was also gathered that late Ugo’s mother left him and his sister in the care of his aunt in Festac several years ago after the demise of his father. His aunt, who is yet to come to terms with his death, refused to speak with at the police station. Police sources said investigation into the incident was still ongoing.

Winnie & Nelson Mandela's grandson arrested for raping a 15yr old girl

todaystalk.com

The grandson of Winnie Mandela and former President Nelson Mandela appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of the rape of a 15-year old girl in Greenside, South Africa. It’s alleged the teen was raped when she went to use the rest room in a restaurant and the boy grabbed and raped her inside one of the toilets.

The young man, who is in his 20s, cannot be named until he pleads guilty to the allegation leveled against him.

According to Daily Sun, the incident happened at a popular restaurant on Friday, August 14th. The boy’s grandmother Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s bodyguard intimidated the father of the rape victim when he initially tried to file a criminal charge against him, according to girl’s family spokesperson.

"Instead, Winnie’s bodyguard went to the family pretending to be a cop. The father was told there was no need to arrest the suspect but when the father asked to see his badge, he didn’t have one. It turned out he had been sent by Winnie" he said.
Meanwhile, Winnie Mandela promised to hand him over to the police. She also said she will call a press conference. None of the promises has been so far kept. "
Just because they have a famous surname, they think they can get away with crime. Children can’t just be raped and then everything is alright. The girl is young and doesn’t even drink" the spokesperson added.
Gauteng police spokesman Brigadier Mashadi Selepe said they are investigating a case of rape opened on August 14.
